The Onion politics section has been having a field day with all of this, and some of the headlines are really good. It’s going to be a wild few weeks of scorched earth and pardons.

But all the people who are totally okay with fascism are still there. Somebody here said, “Law and order with no civil rights is fascism.” And that is pretty clearly the direction Trump was headed in.

He will never concede because he firmly believes everything he says about how the election was rigged. The only ones who are trying to rig the election are the Republicans who will now try to get votes thrown out. McConnell promised a peaceful transition, but they will have to drag Trump out kicking and screaming.

Oh the door hasn’t shut... it just isn’t wide-fucking-open anymore.

it’s not even just a problem in the US. For politicians and political groups across the worl d, in nations that have very different traditions of government than the US does, Trump is seen as an excuse to pursue abhorrent practices and behaviours.

America might not be a real beacon of democracy, but it is in many places the guide of how to manage democracy. even if just superficially analyzed.

I know not a lot has changed, but the symbolic (which many people seem to value) has. It means that people won’t get delighted if leaders act in erratic manners (like people here have grown to), and that the weight of global cooperation will be felt again.

McConnel is a fucking terrible person. He has already said he will road block any B iden nominations for cabinet posts. If McConnell sees anyway to make a personal gain and make someone else suffer that’s the road he will take including launching senate investigations into voting.

While not always being the best country in their own right, the US at least has a history of championing oppressed people and supporting democracy and democratic governments. Trump threw that out the window, along with our NATO allies. Trump did more to dismantle NATO than the Russians could have hoped for in their wettest dreams.

I completely agree, and the disappointing thing is he is the current president and people do listen to him so his followers will be churned to a froth and want some kind of vengeance for their dear leader’s demise. Fuck those guys with a rusty spike. If I see a redneck flying the dixy flag  and a trump flag they are getting the finger.

There is still some hope. There are two congressional elections that are going to a runoff, and those will decide who controls the Senate. If the Dems can get those seats, McConnell can GTFAC.

I believe that all of that began with Newt Gingrich and his Contract With America. That seemed to be the beginning of the Republican ideology of scorched earth, all my way, “if I can’t make the rules I’m taking my ball and going home.” The country had been on the road to extremes partisanship, and Trump only exacerbated it.

TX went red, and the stories are already coming out about poll watchers suing, saying laws were broken and they were excluded. One lady was arrested for filming inside the polling place, which is illegal. The Republicans are going to try winning by denying votes, rather than winning them.

NATO was formed to fight the Soviet Union, not to foster democracy. Turkey and Hungary are members. Hungary ha s straight of nazis in power and Turney ain’t much better.

Our real problem is Americans are very poorly educated when it comes to the history of their nation.

Yes, Wallace is rational. Not sure why Fox keeps him (and their numbers group ) on. Does Fox really care about appearing “balanced” in their news division?

Anything else Fox does like calling AZ early makes me suspicious that they’re doing it for their own interests. i.e. looking ahead to get reposition themselves for at least some influence in a Biden administration. I get that it’s their news, not ‘opinion’ people, but still.

Not what I as implying. I was using it as an example of how Trump has distanced the US from its traditional allies.

I think their hard news dept and their talk/entertainment division are two very different things. I don’t see anything nefarious in the call. They saw it, and called it like they saw it.

Kinja'd!!! DipodomysDeserti > ttyymmnn

Out of the thirty countries in NATO, I think only two would be considered traditional allies (France and the UK). The rest have a pretty storied history of either straight up fascism or appeasement of fascists elsewhere (in the case of the various central European powers). A few others are completely irrelevant. And a lot of those “allies” were pretty fed up with us after our bungling of the Iraq and Afghan wars.

Yes, Trump is bad, but quite a lot has been glossed over in order to make that point.

I have no illusions about the *other* problems our country has (and the Ds are NOT setting out a policy that’ s strong on fixing said issues...) But it’s important to acknowledge that Trump was VERY bad. N ot just for our foreign relations, but for the environment, and business regulation, and taxation, and civil rights, and education , and science, and political stability, and policy moderation, and budgets, and women, and the postal service, and human lives in our own country. If we don’t pay attention to all the bad he did it’s easy to forget a solid half of it (because there’s so much) and either not fix it, or even make it worse...

Many (all) of those were deep seated problems in America long before Trump was around. The big difference is he didn’t pay lip service to fixing them like his predecessors. Which I think may  actually been a good thing moving forward (assuming we now hold the people paying lip service to them accountable). I voted for Biden, but I do not have any illusions that him or Kamala will offer any meaningful change in those regards. The fact that most of my fellow Americans are dancing around like the munchkins in Wizard if Oz is not giving me any hope.

The number of executive orders Trump issued that directly effected the above list in a way that is demonstrably detrimental to the health, stability, equality and future of our nation and the world says he did more than just “not pay lip service [to the issues]” I’m not disagreeing that they existe d before Trump , but it’s really important NOT to forget just how much damage one man *CAN* do if we let them.

I think we need to decide whether Trump was totally incompetent, or the most competent president we’ve had since FDR. People seem to want both to be true.

If he could totally reverse the progress made by Obama in four years, than one of them was totally incompetent. That, or no real progress is made by ruling  through presidential fiat (which they both did).

I’d make the argument they were both incompetent, and that we all need to focus more on who we elect locally.

Trump is an idiot, but he’s a very effective idiot, or possibly more importantly, he is surrounded by people willing to tell him how to get the things they want and who know the loopholes that will allow them to make him make it happen (which I think pretty well describes the Republican party these days *cough* Mitch McConnell *cough*). Obama was very status quo, he exercised executive order to a slightly greater degree than average, and in my op inion, mostly to the benefit of the nation. T rump has signed so many executive orders and appointed so many blatant industry shills to cabinet and commission positions that it’s unprecedented. I would call it an abuse of power, but many, not without reason, will call it “getting shit done”. I think there is no argument that the Trump admin has been very “effective”, just that the effect has been almost universally awful.

Local el ections are important, but the starfuckery of our cou ntry -and top-down organization of our fabulously broken two-party non-coalition government al system- and T he M edia and  the continuing world infa tuation (hopefully much damaged these days) with the US means we *ALSO* need to elect a head of state that reflects where we want to go and who we want to be. Sadly, nearly half the country app arently wants to be the world equiva l ent of a toxically masculine, serial lying, reactionary, misogynistic, racist, hypocritical, classist, asshole.
